The origin of the name Palfuriana comes from the Latin words
Palutris and Furius, and refers to a meeting place on the ancient
Via Augusta during the times of Roman settlement which can be found
today on the coastal region of El Vendrell. It is a wine made from
our own indigenous grapes from the Baix Penedès region.
The philosophy behind it was to make a medium-aged wine (3-4 months)
to better express all the personality of the grapes.
Vineyards: From a selection of different vineyards in the Baix
Penedès with poor, stony soils. Average yield is around
6,000 kilos per hectare.
Varieties: Ull de Llebre (“Tempranillo”) 50 %, Merlot
40%, 10% Grenache .
Winemaking process: Manual harvest followed by manual unloading
on a small selection table, allowing clusters to be manually selected
and leaves removed. Controlled fermentation in stainless steel
tanks at 25ºC. Maceration: 15 days. Ageing: 4 months in 3-year-old
French oak barrels. Bottling: June 2007.
Tasting notes: Intense, brilliant cherry-red colour. Purplish rim.
Medium intensity of colour. Persistent legs. Complex and very elegant
aroma, dominated by red fruits, spices, mineral and grass notes.
Structured and wide in the mouth, long aftertaste. Fresh and pleasant
finish of red fruits.
Serving temperature: 16-18º C.
Evolution: Can be enjoyed until 2010 or 2011
Label: The Arc de Berà, the emblematic Roman archway on
the old Via Augusta, 6 kilometres form El Vendrell. This image
has always been associated with this wine from the very first harvest
(1987), although initially it was only distributed locally.
